Saint Lizier , such a nice village

pictures of Saint Lizier

Saint Lizier is a city of art and history and a halt on St James's trail to Santiago de compostela

A mediaeval city hanging over the foaming river at its foot,

st-liz6.jpg built on the  Gallo-Roman city of Austria

Walking up the flowered lanes you ‘ll get to the former Bishops Palace.

In the background, the Pyrenees with the distinctive peak , Mont Valier, named after the name of the first bishop of the city.

2 cathedrals in this small ancient Archbishopric are wondering which is the nicest one.

The larger one, sits in the middle of the village ,with its redbrick bell-tower, its fountain, its cloister, its choir with the magnificent Christ fresco in a byzantine style and its rare ancient organ.

The more discrete, Notre Dame de la Sède, Our Lady of the Seat, is enclosed in the former archbishops palace. It has been forgotten for a long time but now visitors are stunned by its recently restored frescoes.

Saint Lizier has always been pioneering in the domain of culture with its Classical Music Summer Festival created  42 years ago, its medieval festival and much more.

The Palace of Arts is a new sign of the pioneering spirit attached in the revival of the city.
